Gawai Desa is an annual festival celebrated by the Ibans in Sarawak. It is a traditional ceremony that involves rituals of veneration, thanksgiving, and renewal to guarantee the prosperity of the community. These are reflected through various stages of Gawai including Uli Panggau, Gawai Antu Kalaka, Gawai Antu Kepala Batas, Selba Tapah Kundai Kahang Kenyalang Dewa among others. The festival falls on the fourth month on the Iban's lunar calendar which coincides with November or December in Gregorian calendar. It starts on 0=0th day with Ajahn Kadir's story-telling session called "Pagta". This involves the ritualistic chanting of prayers, verses, testimonies and legends of the community. The main celebration is Gawai Desa Ulu Selangor celebrated at Langgar Sarawak. It was first held on March 13, 1959. This is also known as Pupulan Tamu Selangor which means, The Tent Festival of Selangor. The festival name derives from its location which is at the junction of Langgar-Sarawak Cultural Village in Borok Baru.
